Rehearsal and Performance of Hey Jude in a Folk and Punk version

Rehearsal:

At the start of the rehearsal we had to set up our arrangement, this included bringing the drum kit across from the main college, we all contributed well and worked as a team to not only set up as quickly as possible, so that we made the most of the rehearsal, but we also took real care and positioned everything in a way which we thought worked the best and sounded the best. Also when we started to play the Folk half of Hey Jude Gustavo sometimes would play at a higher tempo than what we should have, but we came together really well and told him in a positive and supportive way that he was going too fast for the song. So I decided that to help keep Gustavo and also James, who was playing percussion, in time was to play some percussion at the right tempo to keep the song tight and make it sound professional. This was one of my strengths as I managed to help everyone keep in time and the song sounded much tighter and fresher, also I used eye contact with people who I knew were out of time to try and show them that they were out of time and help them get into time.

However when we were building up into the Punk half of Hey Jude I found it quite awkward and hard to play a fill at the end of the bridge as it started on the off-beat, this was one of my weaknesses. Although saying this, we really pulled together as a team and went over this section of the song until I felt comfortable with what I was playing and the conversion into the Punk groove. As well as the groove in the Folk half in the Punk half I managed to keep a good tempo whilst playing a groove that supplemented the two genres well.

Performance:

By the time of the performance we all felt very comfortable with what we were playing due to a good and instructive rehearsal. Gustavo started the song at the right tempo, and when James and I started playing some percussion to add a nice layer to the song we kept in time with each other and the piece very well. Also Helio managed to sing in time and the start of the song sounded very fresh and positive. Then the added layer of Esme on the ukulele made the song feel really bright but also replicated Folk song well.

When we got to the lead up and bridge to the Punk half of the song, though it wasn't perfect we managed to get back in time and keep going without showing disappointment in our faces, this showed great togetherness. When it got into the Punk we played very well with everyone being in time and it sounded really good. However when the ending came up there was quite a bit of confusion, mainly because we didn't practise this part of the song with as much detail as the the rest of the song. This shows that practising together really helps with the performances. However we managed to overcome this hurdle and finished the piece well, and together.
