Unit 359 - Live Music Performance

Solo Recital

Set List:

Roll With It - Oasis
Eton Mess - Three Finger Salute
Louie Louie - The Kingsmen
Couldn't Stand The Weather - Stevie Ray Vaughan
Cherry - Three Finger Salute

Reasoning Behind My Choices:

I decided to go for both our originals and covers in order to show how I have interpreted key features from different songs and artists and have used that to give me inspiration in coming up with my own drum part in our songs, but also being able to have my own, fresh ideas. Also these songs all use different techniques and they all sound very different in their styles. For example Roll With It is a classic Brit Pop song, with a driving, happy vibe throughout the song. Whereas Couldn't Stand The Weather, is a more funky rock song which has a lot of dimensions to the song, which doesn't follow the usual Verse, Chorus, Verse, Chorus structure. This brings fresh new ideas to the table and makes the song sound much more interesting and musically better. We took inspiration from Stevie Ray Vaughan from this song when we wrote Cherry, which was the first song we wrote as a band. It sounds quite similar but we have taken our own stance and twist on the song. For example instead of a simple melody line we have integrated a rap into the verses to make it stand out. Also we have a bridge which follows the 2nd Chorus, and instead of ending the song with a Chorus, we go back to the bridge riff to end the song in a much bigger but different way.

Quick and efficient takeover of the stage. Tuning and sound checks all done quickly and with no issues.

Performance

Musical skill and technical skill
There was one slight glitch with the bass drum shifting (this didn’t happen in rehearsal so could not have been foreseen). You coped well with the remainder of the song until you had an opportunity to fix it before the next song. Your performing is energetic and almost technically faultless and you never seem to tire! There was a wide display of techniques, complicated fills and transitions. A few faults in the guitar parts were glued together by your unfazed approach to keeping the group together. You switch between dynamic levels easily depending on the role of accompanist or soloist.

Stage presence and audience communication
Despite sitting at the back of the ensemble the tight triangle which you perform, you are centre stage and still take a commanding role in interaction with the audience, smiling, making eye contact and playing with real showmanship and style. The ability to interact with the audience demonstrates your command of your own part such that it seems effortless. You really engaged with lighting design for your set too which really added an extra dimension to your performance.

The choice of programme

A nice mix of originals and crowd-pleasers that reflected a variety of genres, tempi and keys! The original song really impressed the audience and they struggled to comprehend it, that’s how good it was! The covers really had your own ‘funk’ stamp on them as a band and really didn’t feel like covers!

My performance, based on this feedback, was on the whole very positive and received well. My musical skill and technical ability was "technically faultless" despite the "slight glitch with the bass drum shifting. Unfortunately in the performance my bass drum started to slide forward as I hit it, this was very annoying and it effected my playing. However this wasn't something we could do anything about as it only happened in the performance, we used weights to stop it moving which eventually helped. My stage presence was described as being "commanding role in interaction with the audience, smiling, making eye contact and playing with real showmanship and style." I have worked hard on getting stage presence into my performance, as people attend a gig half for the music and half to be entertained, so this is something which I've worked on, so getting this feedback makes me happy and realise that my hard work is finally paying off. I will continue to improve in this area to provide the best music and entertainment as I can for the audience. The choice of programme was also commended, saying that "The original song really impressed the audience and they struggled to comprehend it, that's how good it was! The covers had your own 'funk' stamp on them as a band and really didn't feel like covers!" This was very pleasing to see as we as a band have been working on creating our sound and making covers sound different and in our style, so for the audience to feel a though we had accomplished that was very rewarding.

My Personal Equipment Needs:

Personally I didn't need much, as I brought my own drum kit in, I feel as though this shows professionalism. The only thing I needed was a tom stand and drum mat. There weren't much Health and Safety aspects to my set up, it was mostly about not dropping cymbals on your feet and not leaving any parts of the kit laying on the floor.

Performance Persona:

My music persona, I think, is very energetic, I like to make my actions big and bold to add an enjoyment to the set and to show the audience that I am into the music I'm playing. I also always try to communicate with the audience, whether thats looking at them or doing jokey things to add a comedy element to the show. Confidence is the key to a good stage presence and I believe, when I'm behind the drum kit, I feel confident and I express my character and personality when I play.

Earlier Performances Impacted Choices Made:

We as a band have played a lot of gigs and have taken the audiences reaction into consideration, we always receive good feedback from Couldn't Stand The Weather and our Original Cherry. So this was the main reason why we chose these two songs, also as a band we enjoy playing these songs the most as they are very energetic and fun to play. Eton Mess, a new original, was written specifically for this performance as we thought that we would make a song that would fit the event. The other songs we picked as they were popular songs which everyone knew and could get into, but we just made them our own by putting a funk twist onto them.
