Development of Pop Music

In groups we made charts to place various artists into their decade when they first came into the scene and then what genre they were, we did this to help us with our presentation of development of music. Also it helps with our knowledge of popular music across the decades. I learnt today that Jamiroquai. were in the genre of Acid Jazz, which is .a kind of popular dance music incorporating elements of jazz, funk, soul, and hip hop. We struggled with Santana as we didn't know whether they were Soul or Rock n' Roll, so we decided to listen to one of their songs. This helped as we came to a joint decision, based on the instruments that were being played and the style in which they were performed, and decided that they were mostly a Rock n' Roll band because of their setup and the style in which they played.

As a class we came up with some key musical developments:

Relying on live performance, not sales
Censorship
Guitar effects
More electronic
Better percussion/equipment
Manufactured bands
Lyrics
Production
Accessibility of music
Multi-track  recording

'Take That' have been around since 1992, when their first album came out and have recently bought out a new album in 2014. In one of their early recordings early, such as 'Back to Good' was released in 1995, is very acoustic, with only an acoustic guitar throughout the whole song. Whereas if you listen to one of their most recent songs, such as 'These Days' they use voice effects programmes to change the way their voices sound, to make it seem more electronic and less acoustic and natural. They have also made a Multi-track recording and use many different layers to make their music seem more interesting. At the start it starts with a keyboard playing a synth style riff, when after the vocals a bass line comes in which does sound very natural. However when the drums come in the snare has a clap sound rather than a normal acoustic snare. This is a use of new technology to make the piece sound better.
