Lesson Overview: 4th November 2015

In this lesson we decided that instead of playing a medley we would create our own song. We did this because we felt more connected to the song. Also WHY

It was reasonably easy to come up with the genre and structure of the piece. WHY


It wasn't hard to come up with the guitar and drum parts. WHY

However coming up with the lyrics are proving to be quite testing. This was because none of us had really had any experience in song writing and what makes good lyrics. So we tried to come up with things that we all liked and were passionate about, we came up with; food, sleep and finding your vibe. We believe this will help motivate us but also make us enjoy performing the song as we feel connected to the meaning. :D

This is really helping me as a drummer as it is making me make important decisions on the go. For example the drum beat needs to be good with the guitar parts, but also quite advanced so that the piece doesn't sound boring.  TELL ME MORE, USE TECHNICAL LANGUAGE

This is Saxona, Dan and my original performance of a typical 1950's song called Boogie and Jive. The drumming part was very good as it replicated similar drumming grooves with the 1950s with very simple and repetitive grooves throughout the song. Also I played a "honky tonk" rhythm which was notorious in the 1950's. I also mainly used snare only fills as that was also very prominent in the 1950's. The lead guitar, Dan, was playing the famous 12 bar blues scale throughout the song. This also links with the 1950's as in Elvis Presley's song 'Hound Dog' also has a 12 bar blues guitar part. The lyrics were also taken from the 1950's with lyrics such as 'Smokestack' which was a famous song in the 1950's played by Howlin' Wolf, the full song called 'Smokestack Lightnin' This is Saxona, Dan and my original performance of a typical 1960's song called The Local Gym. 318 Listening to Music

318 - Listening to Music Survey: I made a survey on survey monkey ( https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/N62PC9B ) asking people questions about their Music Taste and tried to get a more in depth answer than just 'yes' or 'no' or one word answers. I did this by asking why they thought of that answer and going into more detail on an motional level as to why they chose their answer. I mostly targeted my peers but also to a few adults to answer as it gives me more diverse answers as the respondents are all coming from different eras meaning different music was popular for them. Rehearsal and Performance of Hey Jude in a Folk and Punk version

Rehearsal: At the start of the rehearsal we had to set up our arrangement, this included bringing the drum kit across from the main college, we all contributed well and worked as a team to not only set up as quickly as possible, so that we made the most of the rehearsal, but we also took real care and positioned everything in a way which we thought worked the best and sounded the best. Also when we started to play the Folk half of Hey Jude Gustavo sometimes would play at a higher tempo than what we should have, but we came together really well and told him in a positive and supportive way that he was going too fast for the song. So I decided that to help keep Gustavo and also James, who was playing percussion, in time was to play some percussion at the right tempo to keep the song tight and make it sound professional.
